My number 1 movie for the year and for this decade would definitely be Anurag Kashyap's Gulaal. 8 years in the making, with 3 producers backing and abandoning it and a delayed release, Gulaal still stood out because of its anger, drama, performances from its leads and its brilliant music. This is not a review so I am not going to write about the plot/story. Written by Anurag at an age of 25, Gulaal is a movie that takes you to the fictional, mysterious town of Rajpur and its protaganists who I think represent all kind of emotions a human being has. Bhanwar for me was a symbol of loyalty, Rananjay Singh, the freewill, Jadwal, the biggest wannabe "chamcha", Dileep, the ultimate pawn, Dukey Bana, the over-ambitious, Karan, the anger, so on and so forth. The music and lyrics of the movie compliment the story so well that you can not think of Laka without Beedo and Rajpur without Jis Raat Sheher Mein. Be it the names of liquor bottles or the out-of-the-world bar/house in the middle of a desert, Anurag makes sure there are no Bollywood cliches whatsoever. Kay Kay Menon gives his career best performance and one look into his eyes in the opening scene where he delivers a stunning speech, you will be sucked into this drama from the word go. Abhimanyu Singh is brilliant as Ransa and ever dependable, Aditya Srivatsava also scores high. Deepak Dobriyal is very convincing and so is Raja Singh Chaudhary. This review can not end without a mention of Piyush Mishra whose lyrics and music reminded me of Sahir Ludhianvi and Sachin Dev Burman big time. Ladies and Gentlemen, Anurag Kashyap is here. Take a bow, Sir!
